Lois:
In response to your inquiry,
John R. Pace is on the 1880 census of Fluvanna Co, VA,Cunningham Twp., age 72
b. VA, parents b. VA. Wife is Bettie P. age 66 b. VA, parents b. VA
Son William H. Pace age 28 b. VA, daughter Fanny J. age 23 b. VA and son
Richard A. Pace (Richard Alphonse) age 17 b. VA.
There were two other Pace families in this same township:
Jessie (prob. Jesse) Pace age 56 b. VA, wife Martha A. Pace age 58 b. VA and
daughter Sarah A. Pace age 34 b. VA
James M. Pace age 55, VA, wife Mary J. age 50 VA, daughter Allice age 24 VA,
son Thomas age 21 VA, son Dean age 19 VA. I don’t know who this Jesse and
James were but this is probably the Jesse Pace who had land adjoining that of
John R. Pace.
This Jesse Pace is probably related to John R. This guy is on the 1850
census of Fluvanna Co, VA living next door to a Catharine Pace age 50.
Catharine was head of household including children Mary, Rebecca S., John C.
and Elizabeth H. Next door to them is a Joseph Pace age 43 with wife
Catharine 27 and children Archelaus 4 and Jane 2. Next door to them is
William J. M. Pace age 24 with wife Ann F., 27.
Unfortunately I have not been able to identify the origin of any of these
families. I think it is very likely that Jesse was a son of the older
Catharine Pace and that Joseph Pace was a brother of Catharine’s late
husband, whoever he was. William J. M. Pace could have been a son of either
Catharine or of Joseph.
I probably mentioned this before but John R. Pace was on the 1850 census of
Fluvanna Co, VA with wife Elizabeth and sons John W., James S.or L. and
William H. He is in dwelling #365. Not too far away, dwelling #388,is an
Elizabeth Pace age 65, head of household with daughters Lucy A. 39 and Louisa
J. 21. This could well be John R. Pace’s mother, but if so who was his
father? I have a theory about this.
Assuming that John R. Pace (b. abt. 1808) was in Fluvanna County in 1820
there are very few possibilities for his parents. That is because there were
only four to five Pace families in Fluvanna Co. on the1810 and 1820 census
and they were apparently all closely related. These families moved from
Bernardsburg Twp to Columbia Twp between 1810 and 1820 (or else the
boundaries changed).
The oldest was a Nanny or Nancy Pace who was over 45 and was head of
household. She was the widow of John Pace b. 10/31/1740, whose ancestry is
well known. Three of the other Pace families were sons of this Nanny Pace,
namely, William B. b. 1778, John Pace, Jr. b. 1787 and Tarleton b. 1784. A
fourth family was Elisha Pace b. ? who may have been a brother of these
three. It is known that this John Pace, Jr. married Betsy Wilkinson in 1803.
Betsy is a nickname for Elizabeth. The 1810 census shows two sons under 10,
John is 26-45, Betsy is 16-26 and there is one daughter under 10. Their only
identified child is William b. abt 1805. So John R. Pace fits, agewise, the
other son under 10 and Betsy’s age is consistent with the Elizabeth on the
1850 census. Tarlton Pace also had two sons under 10 on the 1810 census and
only one son has been identified, Tarlton, Jr., b. abt 1810.
So my guess is that John R. Pace could have been the son of John Pace, Jr.
and Betsy Wilkinson. What do you think?
Gordon W. Pace
