Dear Gordon,
Thanks for your interest.
I can't really argue with you on Noah and Madison Pace possibly being the
sons of Zilpha Pace, but the evidence doesn't persuade me. I suppose
they could have gone to live with their father and Cassandra. I also
can't explain how Alsey Pace could have two living legal wives, since
bigamy got the death penalty back then.
I am using the birth years for the 1850 census for the children of Alsey
Pace and Cassandra--however, this family is remarkable for their
carelessness about ages, or else the census takers were. I am not at all
sure that another orphan apprentice wasn't also a child of Zilpha and
Alsey --George Washington Pace, called "Johnson" -- age not given in
1853, when he was apprenticed; he just seems to disappear. I know that
Wiseman Pace ran away from his apprentice master and I don't know that he
was ever "captured."
It is possible that Alsey and Cassandra had children before they were
married also. That could account for Noah and Madison here with Alsey.
The only names I can be reasonably sure of for Cassandra and Alsey were
(from the 1850 census):
*2nd Wife of Alsa/Alsey Pace:
+Cassandra Dean b.1810-15 m: . 6 March 1836 in Johnston Co.,
NC
2. Noah - b.1834-37Johnston Co. NC
2. Madison - b.1837-39Johnston Co.NC
2. Harriet - b.1841-43Johnston Co.NC
2. David - b. 1840-41Johnston CoNC
2. Obedience "Beady" - b. 1845JohnstonCoNC
2. Rhinison(?) - male - b.1847JohnstonCoNC
2. Sally - b. 1850JohnstonCo. NC
2. Alsey - male - b.?Johnston Co.NC (he is older than
some of these others, but may be a grandson. - birthdate unclear on
census reports
1860 census for Johnston Co., NC:
PACE, ALSEY - 60 - FARMER $3000 real est., plus $1000 pers. prop.
Cassandra - 35
Noah - 23
Madison - 21
Harriet - 19
David - 18
Obedience - 15
Riner(?) - male 13
Sally - 10
Solomon - 1
All of these were shown as mulatto, but the entire neighborhood was
white. Black would have been one of the options of the census taker.
I viewed this entry on the 1830 census film and I thought it said
ASA/ARA/ALSEY PACE was a female. The film was difficult to decipher.
Perhaps it is my missing ALSEY PACE.

1820 - ALSEY PACE married ZIPHA HALL in Johnston Co, NC.
1830 CENSUS - he was living alone in Wake Co., NC (1 male 36-55;
b.1775-94)
1840 CENSUS - he cannot be found in NC, but Zilpha PACE is in Guilford
Co., NC
1850 CENSUS - he is in Johnston Co. NC age 65 (b.1785)-wife Cassandra etc
1860 CENSUS - he is in Johnston Co. NC age 60 (b.1795)-wife Cassandra etc
1870 CENSUS - he is in Johnston Co. NC - age 85 (b.1785)-wife Cassandra
etc
The 1840 Guilford Co., NC census shows ZILPHA PACE ON P. 261. I know
that Abner would not have been at home since he (and others) were
apprenticed before 1840. So I looked at Paces apprenticed after 1840. I
don't know the exact date of the census, but it is early summer or
spring.
We hired a genealogist in Guilford Co. NC--this was during the very
beginning of our research. The story was that there were no Paces in
Guilford Co. in 1830.
However, I wrote to the genealogist at the High Point Library, NC, and
here is what she said.
High Point Library - J. Hedstrom
"Because of the ages of the Pace apprentices, we surmised that their
father had
died, leaving a widow who is unable to take care of a large family.
There is
an Absalom Pace in the 1830 Guilford County census with several young
children.
In 1840, he is gone, and his wife Zelpha is head of household. There
were some
entries regarding this family in the Minutes of the Wardens of the Poor.
This
makes for a difficult research situation because poor families generated
few,
if
any, county records (such as wills, real estate, etc.). Therefore, we
are
unable
to effectively tie in your Pace to Absalom and Zelpha.
We suggest you investigate the two following sources for Guilford County,
NC:
Minutes, Wardens of the Poor, 1838- 1868 (reel: C.046.90068)
County Court Minutes, 1824-1837 (reel: C.046.30003)
County Court Minutes, 1837-1844 (reel: C.046.30004)
(I did view some of the Wardens of the Poor records and identified Zilpha
Pace as the mother of my Abner and David (retarded), also the other Pace
children I listed in my chart. I was not able to go all the way back to
1840 in the Warden records, however. Never was there a mention of Alsey
Pace, not even in the apprentice bond of Abner Pace in 1837 [court
records did not show mother's name, just said Abner was an "orphan"])
I DISAGREE WITH THIS GENEALOGIST ABOUT ZILPHA BEING THE WIFE OF ABSALOM,
SINCE SHE HAD MARRIED ALSEY PACE IN 1820. THERE MIGHT BE SOME FAMILY TIE
TO THIS ABSALOM PACE, BUT I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS. WHY THE GENEALOGIST
ASSUMED THIS ZILPHA WAS LEFT BEHIND BY ABSALOM IS NOT AT ALL CLEAR TO ME.
SHE COULD HAVE JUST TURNED UP IN ROUGHLY THE SAME PLACE.
1830 ABSALOM PACE - age 40-49 (1780-1790) - one son age 0-4 (1825-1830)
and one young daughter. Neighbors also Armfields in northwest Guilford
Co., namely Oak Ridge Township, adjacent to Rockingham Co. NC Absalom
Pace is gone by 1840.
I could never find ZILPHA PACE on the 1830 Census in Guilford Co. NC (or
anywhere).
The 1840 Guilford Co., NC census shows ZILPHA PACE ON P. 261. I know
that Abner would not have been at home since he (and others) were
apprenticed before 1840. So I looked at Paces apprenticed after 1840. I
don't know the exact date of the census, but it is early summer or
spring.
p.261
PACE, ZILPHA
1 m. (under 5) David?
1 m. (5-10) Young?--app. 8/1847
1 m. (10-15) ?
1 f. (10-15) Edy?
1 f. 15-20 ?
1 f. 40-50 Zilpha herself b.1798-1800
2 of these employed in agriculture
1 idiotic/insane in private charge
(One "insane" child unknown sex died in Aug. 1840, so still at home with
Zilpha.)
Nearby:
ISAAC ARMFIELD - cabinetmaker - Young Pace will go to him in 5/1850.

A lot of these may be apprentices not Armfield
1850 GUILFORD CENSUS- ZILTHA/ZELPHA PACE - age 50 (b.1800 in Chatham
Co.) living with her "idiotic" son DAVID PACE, age 16 (b.1834). This is
in the Southern Div. of Guilford Co., NC. Next door to Ziltha/Zelpha
Pace is Isaac Armfield (cabinet maker) and his apprentice YOUNG PACE, age
15 (b.1835). This Young Pace, plus his apparent brother Needham Pace ,
will take Ziltha/Zelpha Pace and her son David with them to Mecklenburg
Co., NC by 1860, and she lives with Young Pace there.
You know, it is possible there were two Alsey Paces, but the ages seem to
mesh on the census reports, despite inconsistencies. I know that the
Johnston Co. Alsey Pace seems to have a lot of property for that day and
time, and that is puzzling to me. I think that was in a previous message
to you. I do have the 1880 census report (below) but I can't account to
all of the people, who seem to live near each other. I also think that
Alsey Pace in 1880 was closer to 95 years old (b.1785).
