Dear Gordon,

I too have wondered about ALSEY PACE having two sons named David, one by
Zilpha Hall Pace and the other by Cassandra Dean Pace. I can't explain
it, unless one of the census reports is incorrect as to David's location
in 1860, the only census report where he is shown living with Alsey
Pace. Maybe David moved around. One time around 1846 Abner Pace was
paid money every quarter for taking care of his handicapped brother
David Pace (in Guilford Co. Wardens of the Poor records I have), but I
don't know if Abner was then living in Guilford or in Rowan Co., NC. I
have heard other people speak of the same individual appearing in two
different places in a census, but I just don't know on this one.

David's age also varies also with whatever census report you are
reading. I settled on what I think is the closest, making David the last
child of Alsey Pace and Zilpha Hall Pace (b.1834-36)--however, I suppose
that the David living with Zilpha Pace was fathered by another man after
Alsey's disappearance from Guilford Co., NC. I wouldn't argue too long
that I am absolutely correct on the year of birth of David Pace.

Here is the way I show the children of Alsey and Cassandra Pace
*2nd Wife of Alsa/Alsey Pace:
+Cassandra Dean b.1810-15 m: . 6 March 1836 in Johnston Co.,
NC
2. Noah - b.1834-37Johnston Co. NC
2. Madison - b.1837-39Johnston Co.NC
2. Harriet - b.1841-43Johnston Co.NC
2. David - b. 1840-41Johnston CoNC
2. Obedience "Beady" - b. 1845JohnstonCoNC
2. Rhinison(?) - male - b.1847JohnstonCoNC
2. Sally - b. 1850JohnstonCo. NC
2. Alsey - male - b.?Johnston Co.NC (he is older than
some of these others, but may be a grandson. - birthdate unclear on
census reports

1860 census for Johnston Co., NC:
PACE, ALSEY - 60 - FARMER $3000 real est., plus $1000 pers. prop.
Cassandra - 35
Noah - 23
Madison - 21
Harriet - 19
David - 18
Obedience - 15
Riner(?) - male 13
Sally - 10
Solomon - 1
All of these were shown as mulatto, but the entire neighborhood was
white. Black would have been one of the options of the census taker.

The 1870 JOHNSTON CO., NC, CENSUS, p. 438,, shows

PACE, ALSEY - 85 (b.1785--this is consistent with the 1850 census),
farmer, $1500+$300
Cashy - 60 (b.1810), keeps house
Alsey - m. 19? - farm hand
Harriet - fem. 20
Sally - fem. 12
___ - m. 13?
All of these were born in NC. All were marked either White or Mulatto,
but not Black
A mark in columns 16 & 17 seems to be saying that none of them can
read/write
Another mark in column 20, seems to be saying that he is a born citizen
of the U.S.
(I will have to check on these columns because this census (handwritten)
was almost illegible) For the first time we see an Alsey Jr.--I guess
the rest of the kids from the 1860/1850 census have gone out on their
own.

Compare the 1860 and 1870 Mecklenburg Co., NC census reports for this
David Pace, living with his mother Zilpha and brothers Young and Needham
Pace.

1860 Mecklenburg Co. NC census
p. 233
Pace, Zeltha - 60 years old. occup. labor, property $10
David - 24 "idiotic"
p.233 - next door
Pace, Young, 23{b.1837}, carpenter, property $300 +$30 - reads/writes
Nancy, wife, 20 (nee WALLS)
Charley, son 2 mos.
Walls, Lucy, 50 labor
Walls, Caroline 11
Walls, Linda 6
Walls, Eli, 3 mos

p. 238 (fairly close-by)
Pace, Needham, 27{b.1833}, coachmaker $10
Foster, Mary, 30 mulatto, labor (employee? He is not yet re-married). I
am convinced he had a first wife, probably in Iredell Co., NC--she would
have been the mother of Laura Pace, who doesn't live with Needham until
the 1870 census.
Needham Pace will marry Mary/Margaret Myers 3 Apr 1866 in Mecklenburg Co.
NC

1870 Mecklenburg Co., NC census
p. 99
Pace, Young - age 38 {b.1832}, carpenter, property $100 +$125
Nancy, wife 24
Charles, 11
Abner, 9
Gussi (Augustus?), 4
Anamia(?), 2 male?
(where are the Walls?)
P.99 - next door
Pace, Needham, age 45{b.1825}, carriagemaker, property $100 + $125,
Margaret, 27 (sometimes shown as Mary--2nd wife)
Laura 17
Irvin(?), 10
Sallie, 9
David, 40 idiotic (brother)
Zilphie, 74 (mother)

These census ages may not be correct (handwritten census report). On
Apprentice bonds in Guilford Co, Young Pace was age 13 on 6-16-1850 (thus
born in 1834). Needham Pace on 1839 apprentice bonds was about 11 (thus
born 1828). They must also be brothers as Zilpha Pace lived with one or
the other in 1860 and 1870 in Mecklenburg Co., NC.

By the way, I think Alsey Pace was not born in 1775 as Bruce Howard says.
I think (from other census reports, which are confusing) that Alsey Pace
was born closer to 1785. Unless there were two different Alsey Paces who
were classed as mixed blood (white and Indian). All the census reports
show him as mulatto.

I viewed the 1830 Wake Co. NC census . (Zilpha Pace was in Guilford Co.
NC)
PACE, ALSEY - 1 male 36-55 a Free Person of Color - no others, no
slaves. Free Person of Color means Indian--if a Negro, it would have
said Black. Thus born 1775-1794. This must be where Bruce Howard got the
birth year of 1775. Maybe Bruce Howard was trying to place the
conception of Alsey Pace before Stephen's marriage in 1775 to Nancy Ann
Walker, but I think Alsey was born during the marriage of Stephen and
Nancy Ann.

As you can see, Noah and Madison were the children of Alsey and Cassandra
Pace, not children of Zilpha Hall Pace.

Betty Pace.
