Your best bet is probably to order a copy of his death certificate from the Oregon State Archives:
http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/reference.html
In your request you need to include: his name, the date of death, and the county where he died.
The death certificate should tell you where he's buried and where he died, which will help with choosing a Umatilla county newspaper to look in for an obituary. (There are six to choose from in 1957.)
