Anna Hovey

Anna Hovey, 97, of Yachats, Ore., died March 13, 2011 at her home in Sea Aire Assisted Living in Yachats.

She was born Dec. 23, 1913 to Demitri and Katherine Choweanec in Bunnell, Ill. One of five children, she was fluent in Polish, Russian and English.

After high school, Anna married Kermit Hovey, and they moved to Van Nuys, Calif. While Kermit was serving overseas, she worked in an aircraft manufacturing plant, helping to build airplanes for the war. After the war, she and her husband established a successful automotive repair business. She later started her own retail clothing store, Country Girl Fashions, in Newhall, Calif., which remained central to the community for more than 20 years.

In 1979, Anna and her husband retired to Kona, Hawaii, where she discovered her talent as a watercolor artist. In 1989, they moved to Waldport, where she made new friends, continued to paint and discovered her enjoyment of Mahjong. She enjoyed being a part of the community and has many friends who will miss her quick wit and charming personality.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kermit Hovey; and oldest son Lowell Hovey.

She is survived by her son, Terry Hovey; sister Eva; grandson, Jeffrey; and three great-granddaughters.

Note: "Yachats" is pronounced "Ya-hots".
