Donn DeBernardi

Donn Deo DeBernardi, of Lincoln City, Ore., died Feb. 23, 2011 at his home.

He was born Jan. 11, 1929 to Horace and Vivian (Deo) DeBernardi in Crescent City, Calif. He was raised in Roseburg, Ore. He served in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he attended Southern Oregon College where he earned his B.S. in education. He taught elementary school in Coos Bay where he met and married Jacqueline Morris. They had two children, Dawn and Daniel.

The family moved to Lincoln City where Donn sold insurance, then found his lifetime career in real estate. He quickly became one of the top real estate agents in the state selling both residential and commercial real estate development on the central Oregon coast. In 1998, he reconnected with and married his high school sweetheart, Jean Unruh of Medford.

During his lifetime, he was very active in the community. He was a member of the Lincoln City JCs, Elks, Lions Club, Tom McCall Chapter Oregon Steelheaders, Board of Directors Portland Opera, Board of Directors of Ronald McDonald House, Oregon Lodging Association, Italian Businessmen's Club, Shriners, Multnomah Athletic club and the Oregon State Disabilities Advisory Board.

He was an avid outdoors person and loved fishing and sporting events. He had a lifelong season ticket (beginning with the first game) to the Portland Trailblazers and loved spending time with his family. He also liked collectable autos, playing cards and traveling. He will always be known as the consummate joke teller.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Dick DeBernardi.

He is survived by his wife, Jean DeBernardi of Lincoln City; children, Dan DeBernardi of Depoe Bay, Dawn DeBernardi Spencer of Port Hadlock, Wash. and John (Sandra) Unruh of Medford; grandchildren, Dominic DeBernardi of Portland, Ore., Kathryn DeBernardi of Port Hadlock, Tysan and Mark McClusky and Jaclyn Unruh of Medford; niece, Debbie DeBernardi Coryell of Portland; and nephew, Duke DeBernardi, of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Memorial donations may be made to Ronald McDonald House, 2620 N. Commercial, Portland, OR 97227 and the MS Society of Oregon. A celebration of life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 12 at Chinook Winds Resort Hotel banquet rooms, Sandpiper and Neptune in Lincoln City.

Bateman Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
