Maxine Lorraine Haman
Maxine Lorraine Haman, 88, of Yachats, Ore., died March 2, 2011 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis.
She was born Jan. 29, 1923 to Homer and Minnie (Witte) Fisher in Vayland, S.D. She graduated from high school in Brookings, S.D. She married Leland Haman in Brookings on June 17, 1939. They had a delivery business there for four years. They then moved out west to Portland, Ore., to work in the shipyards and later entered into the fishing industry.
She was a devoted fisherman's wife, dedicated and loving mother and a master of homemaking. She was envied as a gardener and as a seamstress. Every year without fail, she would line rows and rows of cupboards with home canned vegetables, fruits and fish. She could prepare a simple or an elegant meal at a moments notice for family and friends or the occasional stranger who just needed a home-cooked meal.
She was a member of the American Legion since 1940. It was her passion to serve the needs of the veterans with all the honor and respect she felt they deserved.
With her talent for sewing, she created, crafted and sold Raggedy Ann and Andy, Gingham Girl and Sunflower Girl dolls, along with many other types of dolls. They were sold throughout the U.S.
She was baptized with her husband, Leland, in 1940 and became a professing Christian from that moment on. All who came to know her would say she was a "tell it like it is woman." Her heart's desire would be that they would come to know Jesus as their lord and savior.
Her last years were spent at Sea Aire Assisted Living in Yachats. She loved the helpers there, and they filled her days with a laugh now and then and lots of comfort. She was the center of the family and will be truly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leland Haman; granddaughter, Janet Adamson; and great-great-granddaughter, Samara Wells.
She is survived by her children, Judith Magee of Phoenix, Ariz., Beverly Henry of Seal Rock, Charlene (Dennis) Vore of Waldport and Gerald Haman of Tucson, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Affordable Burial and Cremation is handling arrangements.
