Gwen,
I know that Ohio has a death certificate index online at the Ohio Historical Society website. Not sure of other states. Texas and California had (may still have) death records online at Rootsweb.com. You might want to check Cyndis list (cyndislist.com I think) to see if other states have them. And let us know what you find.
Anyone know of other states that have death records on line in some form?

Jeanne,

Thank you so much for this web site! I found several of my family members when using it. Since I hail from Missouri, this was a great asset for obtaining death certificates! Is there other websites similar to this for other states?
Thank you once again for all of your hard work and support!
Gwen

The Missouri Secretary of State's office has put a death certificate index online. It provides access to over two million death certificates between 1910 and 1955.
http://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/deathcertificates/
For deaths that occured between 1910 and 1920, you can see a digital image of the actual certificate. You have to allow pop-ups from this site in order to see them. I'm having some trouble with my pop-up blocker, sometimes it will let me allow them on this site and sometimes it still blocks them. Not sure if it's a bug on my end or theirs.

Eventually, more digital images will be made available. But you can obtain a photocopy of the later death certificates for only a dollar now. (Request is by mail and you can print form from the site, up to five death certificates at a time.)
You can do an advanced search by using only a partial name, great for finding married names of daughters.

There is a pre-1910 database (which is where we'd find John Wesley Orahood) but it doesn't seem to be searchable online.
