Hi Lorine and Everyone,
Thanks for the links and information. I checked them out and have some
review information to add.
The link to the 1871 Canadian Census is what would be expected with a
search, free access, etc., although it is a bit awkward to use. I did not
fool around with the search engine enough to identify it special
capabilities and limitations. But it's a good site.
The AllCensusRecords site at first and second glance is a collection of
links to other sites which actually host census listings and searches.
That's OK too but I would have listed it as such - just a personal
preference - criticism intended. The site does appear to be part of a
chain-like organization of sites which is also fine except that it does not
include relevant resources which for whatever reason might be preferable.
Perhaps it would be possible to get these included on AllCensusRecords.com
For example, the 1840 Federal Pensioner's has been available for perhaps a
decade both at Census.gov (.pdf) and in a fully searchable test form with a
very high quality hand transcribed index at:
[1]http://www.usgennet.org/usa/topic/colonial/census/1840/
The 1790 Heads of Families census has also been available at Census.gov and
I put it up on my site along with a reasonably good searchable index a long
time ago.
The Internet Archive at [2]http://www.archive.org has the complete decennial
census for 1800-1930. That's 30,000+ microfilms. In addition, they have
the Soundex index reels generated during the depression for 1880, 1900,
1910. Digitizing 1920 and 1930 are still in progress and presumably will be
done over the next few months. These latter provide a searchable index
which has pluses and minuses compared with a computerized search but are
definitely useable. I've created guides on my site to help you find the
reels you want if you choose to use this resource which really is
extraordinary and comprehensive.
