Looking first at US sources, 1900 census for John Bernard Colliton
give his year and place of birth as Canada about 1840, father born
Ireland and mother born New York and immigration to US in 1864, and
had been married 32 years(~ 1868)
This leads to other US census for John : 1892 NY State census, 1880
census and 1870 census.
There are clues in the Niagara Falls Gazette on the Old Fulton site
about the Colliton family. One in particular mentions sister Sarah
Beattie of Cleveland visiting her brother John Colliton. (Sept 15 1908
p8)
So now looking in the Canadian census, John can be found in Grimsby
Lincoln County, Ontario in the 1851 and 1861 census. Images for 1851
and 1861 can be accessed through ANcestry . 1851 images are also
available for free through
http://automatedgenealogy.com/index.html
Look for Canada West, Lincoln county, Grimsby township and the surname
is recorded as COLLATON. John is shown as age 12 (age in 1852). The
head of household is Bernard born in Ireland about 1809 and wife of
Bernard is Maria born USA about 1818. That fits the places of birth
for John's parents from the 1900and 1880 census. John's possible
siblings in this census are Margaret age 14, Peter age 9 Sarah age 7
and Maria age 4.
Images for the 1861 census are only on Ancestry but indexed on the
LDS site. The children in the 1861 census for "Barnabas" and Maria
are Margaret 22, John20, Peter 18. and Sarah 15.
There don't seem to be death registrations for Bernard and Maria in
Ontario. They do appear in the 1871 and 1881 census still in
Grimsby.

-e.php
With Bernard and Mariah are Palmer Coleton age 27 and his wife Allice
b US age 22
In these records, Bernard is noted as Roman Catholic, Maria and
children are Methodist.
Maria is found next in Lockport in the 1892 state census on the LDS
site. She is with her son Peter COLLITON age 49 born Canada,
occupation moulder. Maria is shown as age 74 b US. It could be that
Bernard also went to Lockport. You should check for death certificates
for Maria and Bernard in Lockport.
The connection to Sarah Beattie provides the only record where I was
able to find a mention of the mother as a Cooper. Her death record
(Sarah Beatty died May 6 1925) in Cleveland (on the LDS site) names
her parents as Barnard Colliton born Ireland and Maria Cooper, born
NY.
There are other mentions of Colliton families in the Niagara
newspaper. One is the obituary of Julia Flewellyn in the Niagara
Falls Gazette March 4 1929. It mentions she is survived by one brother
Palmer COlliton and a sister Marie Branch of Lockport. Julia was the
widow of Emory FLewellyn. This again shows a connection to the
Grimsby family but raises the question why Julia wasn't with the
family in the 1851 and 1861 census. She was in Grimsby but with
unrelated(?) families.
There are marriage registrations in Lincoln County Ontario for 3 of
the children . None for Charles Palmer Colliton who married Alice,
John Bernard who married ARdasa, Peter didn't seem to marry.
Sarah Coliton married William Beatty Jul 15 1868 Her parents named as
Bernard and Maria.
Juliett Colloton married Emory Clark Dec 9 1869 Her parents named as
Barnabas Colloton and Mary Colloton. Witness was Maria F Cooper. This
registration has obvious error in that groom should be Flewellyn.
Julia's details from her 1900 census says she was married 30 years and
husband in the census is Emery. You'd have to get the church record
for this marriage and check there weren't any other errors.
Mariatt Colloton married James A Fox Dec 27 1868 Her parents named as
Bernard and Maria. James Fox died and Maria remarried to James L
Branch in Lockport around 1898.
Margaret, born Smithville, age 33, to Charles T Meloy Sept 18th 1871.
Her parents named as Bernard Collaton and Mehetable Collaton.
Witnessses were Emery Flewelling and William Beatty both of
Smithville. (indexed as Collston on Ancestry)
It appears that Sarah was the only sibling of John Bernard that went
to Ohio. You'll need to check the death certificates for all the
Collitons that went to Lockport- John Bernard, Charles Palmer, Peter,
Maria, and Julia and their parents. The Meloys lived in Richfield,
Tioga County NY.
The 1851 census shows other Collaton people born in Ireland living in
Lincoln county. They were Roman Catholic so Bernard may be part of
these families.
Good luck with your search.
