I am doing my bi-annual posting in hopes of finding someone with
information and/or hints about this line, both are my gggrandfathers.
Joseph Jones was born "on board ship, Atlantic" about 1820. (His
obituary). According to census records he was b. England. Father
Mother Irish. He married Margaret Wallace in 1843 in Perth, Lanark Co.
(First Presbyterian Church). Margaret was b. Ireland as were her
parents(Scotch Irish). The Wallace family arrived 30 May, 1836 in New
on the ship Franklin from Glasgow. They stayed a year in New York and
moved to Canada. (Letter of recommendation from Minister in New York
Minister in Perth.) The Minister in New York was Rev. David Longmore
a child named Mary Wallace Longmore. David was b. Ireland and had a
there before moving to New York.
Joseph Jones settled first Bathurst Twsp, then N. Burgess Twsp. in
and finally moved about 1866 to Bedford Mills, Frontenac Co. He did
the land he lived on until he bought a school reserve property in
Mills. The censuses list him as a farmer but after visiting the
lived on I know he was a miner/logger. He would appear to be very poor
was educated. He served as Town Councilman and on the School Board in
Bedford Mills. He was a long time Orange Lodge member in Westport. His
obituary was glowing, 'largest funeral ever seen in area'. But not a
where he was from. He doesn't seem to fit into any known Jones family
Westport area (I have researched them all) but seems to have always
lived in the area.
His mother may be a Jones who tried to marry in 1825 but Rev. Bell
wouldn't marry them
as she was already married. It is said she had two small children and
husband deserted her.
Who were Joseph's parents? Was he perhaps related to wife Margaret?
families of Jones, Wallace and Longmore inter-related? Any help or
suggestions REALLY appreciated! Pat in Idaho
