Hello everyone
I wanted to take a minute to thank all the terrific
posters who are providing such great information to our
Ontario List.
We have excellent contributions from knowledgeable
subscribers that I haven't seen on many other lists, in the
form of answers to queries and in posting of resource
material.
That's what makes our Ontario list unique (in my opinion)
I want to take a minute to remind everyone of a few items
that will help make the running of our list smoother for
everyone
1. Please stay on topic. The topic for our list is the
history and genealogy of Ontario after 1865. If your email
to the list doesn't have anything to do with Ontario after
1865 it's not on topic.
If you have an OFF topic question, please join the
appropriate mailing list for that topic or Roots-L as it
is generic and any question can be posted there.
2. Please don't ASK technical questions or pleas for help
regarding list difficulties, ON the list.
Those posts go to all list subscribers, but probably the
only one who can help you is the list admin.
3. Please don't RESPOND on the list to technical questions
that are posted - write to the person privately if you
think you can help
4. Don't post to the list if your reply should really go in
private email
5. Don't post "me too!" emails - these are emails that
simply state "I agree" or "Right on" or "me too". It's fine
to respond to a discussion or topic but please make your
post meaningful by adding something of interest to the
topic.

so it's a great one to bookmark.

*** Common Problems***
The two most common problems that subscribers write to me
about are
1. Not getting list mail
2. Not being able to unsubscribe
Not getting your list mail? DON'T write to the list about
it.
**FIRST**** visit the ROOTSWEB HELP DESK for notices
about
Rootsweb problems.
http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com
There's no sense flooding my email inbox or the list with
hundreds of messages about lists possibly being down (all
that mail will end up being held til the problem is solved,
then it will all be posted to the list!), or you not
getting
all your list mail. Check to see if the problem is noted on
the HelpDesk page.
***SECOND**** If there's no notice on the Rootsweb HelpDesk
page, write to me, NOT the list, for help.
Please make your message brief, but clear, tell me what
list
you're talking about (I'm an admin for almost 30, and if
you
dont' tell me which one you're talking about, I can't help
you), tell me exactly what the problem is and what you've
done to try to solve it.
Forgot my email address? The easiest way to get it is to go
to http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/CAN/ONTARIO.html
and
scroll down to "For questions about this list, contact the
list administrator at "
(You can do this for any list you're on - find the Rootsweb
page for that list and use their contact LIST ADMIN address
there)
Most common mistake from subscribers trying to unsubscribe
is they are using an address they aren't subscribed under.
All Rootweb lists are
automatic, they are run by robots, making them self-serve
for subscribers. A nice feature but remember that the robot
can't think, it just follows orders. It also doesn't
recognize NAMES, it only recognizes EMAIL addresses. So if
you subscribed under you can't
UNsubscribe
from your alternate email address of or
.
Enjoy the mailing list and please save this email so you
can refer to it if needed
