Hi:
The LDS have recently started online ordering for Family History Centres
located in Canada.
Patrons can now order their own microfilm or microfiche online using a
credit card.
Films cost $6 Canadian and fiche are $5 for a set. Credit cards may charge
an exchange fee.
There is a 90 day loan period but that begins when the item is shipped from
Salt Lake and ends when the item is returned to Salt Lake leaving approx. 30
days viewing time at the Family History Centre.
They can chose the Family History Centre where they wish the item to be
shipped.
When it arrives at the FHC they will receive an e-mail.
I have heard that other facilities may be able to receive these items in
future but don't know of any specific places at the moment. However I
rather doubt that branch public libraries would be included and doubt that
many of them would have microfilm or microfiche readers needed to view these
items.
There are a lot of bugs being worked out in this new system at the moment.
Inventories of many of the Canadian Family History Centres have yet to show
up in the Family History Library Catalogue. Hopefully in the future you can
check the Catalogue to see whether an item is already available in a nearby
Family History Centre.
In the meantime you should check with your nearest Family History Centre
before ordering an item in case it is already available at the Centre.
You can find a list of Family History Centres listed on the website
www.familysearch.org
Family History Centres also offer free access to some useful websites
including FindmyPast, The Genealogist, WorldVitalRecords, etc.
Cheers
Janis
