Marge.
It did work out with the directories!! ,and thank you for the 1930
censusimage!!.
I believe they were in Allamakee County ,Iowa in 1925 census too.
I can`t see ,but it seems to list parents as well. I guess that census would
proof if my Hilda is the one married to Marcus Hansen. Would appreciate that
census image also.
Thanks again ,
Erik

Hi Erik:
Each "leaf" is a page in the book. The "leaf" numbers are not the same
numbers as the page numbers that you see at the bottom of each page in the
book as the first leaf is the actual first paper page in the book, whether
it is a blank page, or the title page, or an index page, or .... So the leaf
number will be a larger number than the actual page of text contents of the
book.
Once the page of results comes up with the leafs shown on the right, click
on the leaf, and when that page opens, use zoom to enlarge until you can
read the entries on the page, scroll to find where the surname Hansen is
highlighted, the list is alphabetical so look down the list until you see
Marcus and the citation that I gave you.
Not all the leafs will have a reference to the Hansen you are looking for.
Some refer to a street name, some to a company name, etc.
For example, click on the 1916 Ottawa City Directory. On the left, click on
Read Online. Once the book has loaded, in the search box type only the word
Hansen.
You should see on the right, leafs numbered 107, 108, 496, and 511. Click
on Leaf 496. Once it loads, click on the + Zoom once, or until you can read
the page, near the top left of the page. Look on that page and in the
right-hand column, you will see Hansen, Carl. Look below Carl's name and
you will see the listing for Marcus that I quoted you, " Marcus, machinist
for J A L Ellacott, resides East View.
Do you see it now? If the surname of a number of people is the same in a
column, then after the first one, only " (ditto mark) and the given name are
then shown, with each person's info beside that given name.
Now, to try another leaf to see what is on that page, click on Leaf 107.
When the page comes up, scroll down and look for the grey highlighting of
the word Hansen. It is near the bottom of the middle column, under Percy
Intersects (which means that Percy Street/Avenue Intersects) and under that
is 413 Hansen Herman.
So Herman Hansen lives at 413 Percy where Percy intersects with....look in
the middle of the left column to see a heavy black line and in capital
letters "GLOUCESTER, runs west from 150 Elgin to Bronson...". So Percy
Street/Avenue intersects with Gloucester Street/Avenue, and Herman Hansen
lives at 413 near that intersection.
This is the Addresses portion of the City Directory where people are listed
not in alphabetical order by surname but rather this portion of the
directory lists addresses and then the name of the head of the household who
lives at that address. OK?
Click on Leaf 108 and near the top of the middle column you will see 406
Hansen Daniel. Look in the column on the left at the very bottom and you
will see "Bay St intersects" and then the house numbers and names begin. To
find out what Bay St intersects with, you will have to go back one page
because there is no BOLD street name listed anywhere in the left-hand column
above "Bay St intersects", so at the top above the page where you see Page
and the number 100, change the100 to 99. Click enter.
This take you back to the page before which is page 99 or Leaf 107, same
thing. The only heavy black line with a street name below it is the same
one that we found for Herman Hansen, above, GLOUCESTER.... So Daniel Hansen
lives at 406 near where Bay St intersects with Gloucester and Herman Hansen
lives at 413 near where Percy Street intersects with Gloucester. Again,
this is called the Addresses portion of the city directory as opposed to the
portion of the directory which lists people in alphabetical order which is
where you found Marcus Hansen.
Marcus Hansen lived in East View which may not have been a part of Ottawa
itself so its streets were not included, or it was out in the country and
had no street names, etc, so that's likely why you didn't find an address
listing for Marcus Hansen.
Now, click on the last leaf of the1916 directory which is Leaf 511. You are
now back in the alphabetical by surname listings, rather than by street
names. Scroll to the highlight. It just says "Hanson, see also Hansen",
reminding the reader that there is a spelling variation for that surname.
Does that make looking at the directories more clear for you?
The 1923 directory has eight leafs come up when you search Hansen. Follow
this procedure and click on each to see if Marcus is listed, and do the same
for the other City Directories on the site.
In the 1923 directory, click on leaf 1102. At the top of the left column it
says "Eastview". In the right column towards the bottom is:
Hansen Daniel, elect, h 37 Palace
This means that Daniel Hansen is an electricial and his home is located at
37 Palace. In the abreviations, rms or r means rooms at or has rooms located
at ... It may be in another person's home or in a boarding house, etc.
Let me know if you have problems.
