Subject: [ONTARIO] missing 1861 census entries
Date: Thu, 18 Jun 2009 07:05:27 -0400
For anyone researching in London Township, the 1861 census transcription recently put on Ancestry.ca may not answer your questions.
It is particularly frustrating because half the 1851 census for London Twp is missing.
I had hoped that the images could be sufficiently enhanced for transcribers to read some of the badly faded pages. That has certainly been the case on the FreeREG transcription project in England with which I am involved. Unfortunately, because the Ontario 1861 transcribers were unfamiliar with the names, several entries for my ancestors do not appear on Ancestry that I was able to read on my own. Due to the poor condition of the 1861 film there are also moretranscription errors than usual.
If your ancestor was living in London Twp 1861 it would be worth your time to examine the microfilm yourself.
