It is not only good practice but also a recommended convention for
genealogists to use the day/month/year format with the month spelled out (or
at least abbreviated i.e. 1 January 2009. (Professional Genealogy edited by
Elizabeth Shown Mills, p8)

Please also keep in mind how the date is written (month/day/year or
day/month/year) as it varies from place to place. I have gotten in the habit
of always writing out the month vs. using a numerical designation to avoid
any problems!
