This is an interesting topic for all of us who either transcribe or use
indexes to find people on censuses.
Just yesterday I was transcribing the Ontario 1861 census on the LDS pilot
site. I found the enumerator gave the first person in a family the surname
of the previous family. The surname change did not occur until the wife's
line. The LDS does not allow its transcribers to make notes as they type.
This was in a farming district in Dundas County with a lot of hired hands
interspersed with large families. Unless they are really keen family
historians, the descendants of that couple will really be left wondering
what happened to great-grandfather in 1861.

Hi again:
If you should happen to use a Library that has access to Ancestry you can
enter that comment to the name so that others who may be searching but who
do not use this List will see it.
There are many such errors by both enumerators, transcribers and registrars
and I always find it helpful when someone has put in an alternate name.
Cheers!
Doreen

Hi Listers,
I as the gr.gr.grandaughter of Robert and Jane Clark must advise of an
enumeration mistake which this is the only way I know of correcting for it
other researchers. Robert,Jane,Eli,Martin and James are down as last name
Robert not Clark as it should be. Robert and Jane's son John is enumerated
as Clarke ,John so it was confusing finding the rest of the family until I
looked in the Ont.Gen.Soc. site and found out that their neighbours were the
Stephen McQuaig family. Upon locating this family then I find Robert and
Jane Clark family misenumerated as Robert,Clark.
Thank-you for your time and the help others have given me over the years.
Rae in Sask.
