Hey Brian,

Regarding item 3, I have the following variation from "Landmarks of
Toronto", Page 185 (Volume unknown, will have to do a better job of
documenting my sources!):

"Reid and Harrison--At Toronto, on the tenth day of November, one thousand
eight hundred and forty-seven, were married by license, Joseph Reid,
bachelor, and Bell Ann Harrison, spinster, both of Toronto, by me, John
Barclay. This marriage has been duly solemnized between us, Joseph Reid,
Bell Ann Harrison, and in the presence of us, W. Taylor, Sarah Harrison."

Given what you have stated, I will probably focus my effots on finding
Joseph's family in the 1861 census (I have a couple of potential addresses
that appear to be in St. Andrew's Ward) and to look at military records at
the Archives of Ontario (I've stumbled across a note at
www.archives.gov.on.ca regarding "British military records, "C" Series,
1767-1896 (NA RG 8)").

This mention of the 77th regiment has really increased my curiosity about
the early military career of Joseph Reid, the only great-great-grandparent
who was not a farmer (however, they all came to Canada from England,
Scotland or Ireland in the 1830s and 1840s).

City directory entries suggest that Joseph's address was the "Lord Raglan
Inn" (1856, no occupation given) and later, in the early 1860s, Adelaide and
King Streets west (G.T.R. engineer: I suppose people in those days went
through some fairly 'extreme' career changes, if he's the same person).

Thanks so much for those points (I never dreamed I'd get so many responses
to my question!).

Cheers,
--Doug

Hey Doug:

Just a few quick thoughts for you ...

1. If memory serves me correctly the transcription of the St. Andrew's
records is based upon the Roberston transcription. I am not at home now, so
can not check to see if the original records have been compared since.

2. The marriage "certificate" would have (maybe) been given to the couple at

the time of the ceremony, if indeed one was given to them at all.

3. source: Archives of Ontario. District Marriage Registers series. Home
District register, Vol. 2, page 302. Joseph Reid, of Toronto, Bachelor, and
Belle Ann Harrison, Spinster. Married 10 Nov. 1847 in Toronto by Rev. John
Barclay. Witnesses: W. Taylor and Sarah Harrison.

4. As this marriage was performed by a Presbyterian Minister no copy was
required to be entered in either the Anglican registers nor the Roman
Catholic registers.

5. A copy of the marriage may be found with his service record, or it could
be annotated on the page requiring family details. There are several
variables which could play a role in this process.

6. If Joseph died in Toronto before 1900, and if there was indeed a monument

erected to his memory, it seems that that no stone has survived or it is
illegible.

Hope that this helps.

Cheers!
Brian
