That's a shame that happened to you Heather. I suppose no
system is foolproof, mistakes happen.

All I can tell you is that from my own personal
experiences, having sent for, and received, over 100
attestation files from WW1, NAC has come through for me
every time.

I have sent letters with names, place of birth, year of
birth (that is the most important piece of info), spouse's
name if known, parents' names if known, residence at the
time (if known).

I think for the small cost involved (20 cents/page if it
hasn't been raised) it is worth the odd mistake. :-)

Mind you if you sent them a second letter, explaining what
happened in your case, along with a copy of your FIRST
letter where events are clearly listed, it wouldn't
surprise me if NAC did a second lookup for you for free

Also, I'm sure you did this, but for others here is a tip -


always put your info neatly typed, separated by lots of
white space (easier on the eyes) and as brief as possible
in any letter to NAC requesting lookups. Make it as easy
and fast as possible on the person doing the lookup to use
your info to help find what you want
