I partially dismantled a brick wall this week in that I have finally found
Isabella CRAIG, sister of my husband's gggg-grandfather.

Isabella was born in Ireland in 1838, eldest d/o John & Mary.
The CRAIGs came to Canada in the early 1840's, ending up in Goderich, Huron
Co where John was a hotel keeper.

Isabella first married James JOHNSTON. I am not sure of the date, but
their eldest child was born about 1858.
Isabella's obituary (1906 in the Goderich Star) says that James died 19
years after they were married.
She then married William STOWE sometime between 1871 and 1874. But William
too died (after 1878 but not sure when)

Isabella did not re-marry another time, but by now she had 8 children, 6
JOHNSTON & 2 STOWE.

Daughter Ann STOWE, born about 1874 in Turnberry twp., married Robert C.
KING, s/o Duncan KING & Mary WARWICK. In 1906 Robert & Ann were living in
Goderich.

Son J.C. JOHNSTON (John or James), was living in Bluevale, Huron Co in 1906.
Son W.C. JOHNSTON was living in Chicago in 1906
Son Thomas JOHNSTON was born about 1863, living in Goderich in 1906
Son Hugh JOHNSTON was born about 1869, living in Tacoma in 1906
Daughter Mary JOHNSTON, born about 1865 in Bluevale (Turnberry twp) married
Benjamin SAULTS, hotel keeper in Goderich, s/o William & Mary (he was born
in Hamilton Ont)
Daughter Lizzie JOHNSTON who married William ERNEST (after 1897 and before
1906), in 1906 they were in Goderich
Son Henry STOWE, in Goderich in 1906.

I have found Isabella in the 1881 census in Turnberry twp., under Stown,
with all children given that surname. Isabella's marital status is given
as married, but there is no sign of William.

I have yet to go through the 1901 census for Goderich & Turnberry twp.

Is anyone else looking at any of these families?

Thanks

Mary C
