I have also found if you put your picture on a black cloth, set on a table in front of a window, on a dull day with no sunlight. You can get good results without using your flash.

> Hope this is still interesting to the list. My husband, the techno wizard just came in and I explained about the copystand vs scanner emails. (I had a response saying that a flatbed scanner would do the trick as well.)
> We do have a flatbed scanner and he found that the resolution is not high enough and it sometimes creates imperfections on your copy. This is typically because the light source on less expensive scanners is not necessarily colour balanced. The newest scanner($700 range) which he just looked at is 2800 dpi. His explanation to me is that the camera gets better results because the colour film used today is 8000 dpi. The blue bulbs used on the copystand are for balancing the colour of today's film. Most people copying old pics use colour film to pick up the different tones on the old pictures. If they used black and white film they could use a white incandescent bulb as opposed to the blue incandescent. The blue gives a softer more uniform light. Also, if you take your copy of the photo and enlarge it, the resolution will be much better from the camera copy. Who knows what details you may find.
