There seems to be a lot of enthusiasm and wise advice on the list today
about an Ontario BMD database project. Probably the next step is to let
Jill take charge and contact the Archives to get permission, then step up
(I've over simplified this) a usable database format and look at different
ways to distribute workflows and manage the project.
A good sample would be the FREE BMD site on Rootsweb which does a similar
project with the UK BMD database. I have transcribed for that project and
thought an Ontario version would be an excellent idea. Free BMD breaks
transcriptions down by page and gives each transcriber 2-5 scanned pages at
a time to complete. Once completed, another set is earmarked for that
transcriber. It seems to work well and is very efficient. They even
developed a downloadable program to simplify the input process and keep
geographical names standardized.
Take it away Jill and keep us posted on your progress. I will be more than
willing to help as I can.
Steve
