Greetings to all:

As one of the Founders of "The Friends of The Archives of Ontario" - I can
inform you that this idea of indexing birth, marriage and death
registrations has certainly come up before. Yes, there are many individuals
who have transcribed some limited entries and published both on-line and in
hard copy. All previous discussions for a "master index" database have been
dealt some type of death blow for various reasons.

This is one area where the advice of The Archives of Ontario must be sought.
I am not sure
of how these specific BMD records fall into copyright.

Please remember that just because a record or document is available for
research it does not mean that the copyright on that item has expired.

Jean Dryden, former Archivist of The United Church of Canada, and also a
Board Member of The Friends of The Archives of Ontario, has a brand new
publication coming out soon on the topic of copyright and research in
Canada. It will certainly become mandatory reading for all genealogists,
archivists, librarians, etc.

A few weeks ago there appeared at the Archives of Ontario a new form which
must be filled in before, and permission can be granted by The Archives for
publication of any records which fall under their jurisdiction, both
originals and microforms. This includes hard copy, on-line reproduction,
public displays, and or broadcast).

So, while I am not a copyright expert by any means, before any such large
scale transcription projects begin, please ensure that the proper channels
are followed.

Cheers
