Mary--
You bring up an excellent point--this hobby of ours is indeed a hobby.
Granted, it is an obsessive, often passionate one, but it is still a
hobby. It is wrong to presume that all, or indeed any, of our family will
share our hobby, or share our enthusiasm for it. This doesn't make them
bad people. It is often hard for us to understand how our relations could
not be interested in their own family history. But they probably have
different hobbies. We can still share our findings with them, but be
realistic. I would not necessarily be too enthused, for example, if a
cousin wanted to share his dead bug collecting hobby with me. So how can
I presume he would be glad to share my hobby?
If a family member has shown interest in genealogy, and demands our
findings, without so much as a by-your-leave, well that's just plain
rude. At the least, a thank-you is in order.
Some of us are lucky enough to have families who rejoice in each other,
and share their common bonds. This certainly makes our work easier!
Regards,
Liz
