A gedcom is already a plain text file. You can read it with any word
processing program. It may not mean much to you but you'll be able to read
the words. If you just want a text equivalent of what you get with a gedcom
to html conversion (in other words, you want to see the links between the
people), use ged2html or one of the other similar conversion programs to
get an html file. Open the file with WordPerfect or any other word
processing program that can read html. Then save the file in the word
processor's native format (.wpd for WordPerfect, .doc for Word, etc.).
After you do that, you'll be able to open the file just like any other
document you created with that program.
