Hi Claire: Although I can't be of very much help, I looked up Brantford
in the book "Places in Ontario" by Nick & Helma Mika, Mika Publishing
Co. Belleville Ontario, 1977...here are the two small notations made:
"...It is served by the CNR (*my note - Canadian National Railway - now
VIA Rail), the Lake Erie and Northern Railway, as well as the Toronto,
Hamilton and Buffalo Railway..." and "...The railway came and the town
became the distributing centre of one of the richest agricultural areas
in Western Ontario. In 1852 Brantford was made a port-of-entry,
Valentine Hall being the first customs collector..."
Names mentioned in the 4 page article on Brantford [that's why I didn't
type the whole article out!!] are:
Joseph Brant; John Stalts; John A. Wilkes; S.V. Douglas; Nathan
Gage; Henry T. Sage; Marshal Lewis; Jedediah Jackson; James and
William Muirhead; Lewis Burwell; James Cockshutt; W. Spencer; James
Durand; Abraham Cook; John Benjamin; James Storm; John Ryckman;
James Gilpin; John Mitchell; W. F. Whitehead; C. Austin; P. O.
O'Donohue; A. Richardson; John Cunningham; Rufus Houghton; John
Lovejoy; John A. Wilkes; William Spencer; Ignaius Cockshutt; R. J.
Tyner; Dr. E. Stone Wiggins; Dr. Clarke; Dr. Thomas; Dr. Gilpin;
Dr. Alfred Digby; Dr. Egerton Griffin; William Walker; John W. Downs;
Joseph Gardner; Daniel M. Gilkison; James Wilkes; William Muirhead;
John R. Macdonald; Michael Kopsa; Valentine Hall; Dr. J. W. Digby;
Thomas McMeans; Reverend Thomas Henderson.
Hope in some small way that this helps!
