>From the questions I have received since I posted info on the COUNTY
marriage registers, it seems that further info is necessary.
Prior to 1858 there is a smattering of marriages [some estimate less than
50% of those that actually took place] in a series called the DISTRICT
marriage registers. These were actually done in much the same way, with the
protestant and non-Church of England ministers responsible for submitting
records of who they married to the local registry office.
.... Why not RC and Church of England .... because they supposedly had a
good system of parish registers ... and the CofE was going to be the state
church and so the records would be available to the state. [The fact that
this did not happen is immaterial!!]
These registers are also available through the LDS or the Archives of
Ontario interloan system.
The originals, such as they are, are mainly at the AO in RG 80-27-1.
Go to the Archives of ONtario web page and find the film numbers ... or the
LDS Family History Library Catalogue for the same......

And of course .... there are the usual exceptions to the expected ... so we
all know that what you want won't be there!!!
Hope this answers a few more questions.
If you have further questions you might be interested in a 4-day residential
course that I am giving in September in co-operation with the YWCA in
Toronto. For further information contact the Y at
