Subject: [ONTARIO-L] KIRK & PRESS, Markham/Unionville/ late 1800's

Hi.. I'm searching for information on my great grandparents Edward
KIRK and Harriet PRESS Kirk who lived in Unionville, York Co.,
Ontario in the late 1800's / early to mid 1900's. Edward came from
England at age 16 (date unknown) by himself according to family
stories, bringing with him a fine china chocolate pot - a rather
unusual item for a teenager traveling by himself. Harriet was, as
far as the family knows, born in the Markham area. My
grandmother, Eleanor Mabel KIRK was born in 1890 in Unionville.
There were three other children in the family, Jane (or Jano),
Evelyn and Fred.
I'm the first one in my family to try to research our genealogy and
those who might have been able to tell me more about the KIRKs
have passed away. I do know that Edward was a storekeeper,
perhaps a butcher, in Unionville and I have a photo of the house in
which my grandmother was born (but no address). My aunt thinks
that the PRESS family might have been Irish, but has no definitive
information. I have found a James Press, age 40, listed in the 1871
census index as living in Markham Twp, but have been waiting
almost four months for the inter-library loan of the census tapes, so
have - as yet - been able to connect him to Harriet. If anyone has
any information at all on these families or clues to where I can seek
information, I would appreciate it. Thank you.
