One of you life-long Toronto residents may remember the old dwelling at
185 Bloor East, located next door to and just to the west of the old St.
Pauls Episcopal Church. It was built around 1877 by my Ggf Caleb Elias
English, and was called, in those days, "Ingleside." After the turn of
the century it was for two decades a boarding house. Starting in 1925
it is in the directory (#85 in those days) as "Roslyn Tea Room." In
1932, after renumbering to #185, it was the Roslyn Private Hotel and was
so called until the late 1940s. In the early 1950s the listing is for
the Roslyn Boarding House.
It appears to have been torn down in 1954, roughly, and replaced by a
seven story building called Cockfield Brown Building. Does anyone have
recollections of this house? Any suggestions of where I might look for a
picture of it? Thank you! Alan English in NJ
