Subject: [ONEILL] O'Neil and Roberts and a railroad accident
Date: Mon, 21 May 2007 08:26:24 -0700 (PDT)
Hello List, OMG, I just saw a post from a ROBERTS about the O'Neal family and this incouraged me to post about my ROBERTS & O'Neil family. My great great grandfather was "John O'Neill from Ireland. Then came Henry and Alfred Henry who married at least 3 times (according to our census records). In 1922 he changed his name to ROBERTS.
Alfred Henry O'Neil (aka: Roberts) was born in DEC 1881 and died in an auto accident in April 1940. Unknown how and just when his father died, but it was before 1900. We are told he had a brother who died about that time too in California (possibly Sonoma) in a tree falling accident. His step-dad was a railroad worker (Edward Chandler, an engineer) and died in a train accident before 1931.
The last post I just read had Roberts and O'Neal and made me think "how close", and yet so far away! Alfred Henry O'Neil had a son who was named after himself: Alfred Henry O'Neil jr born about 1905. *1910 census San Joanquin, CA. Alfred Henry O'Neil is married to a Mary L. who is 29 and their son who is 5 yrs old married for 7 yrs. Later we found him married to a Rose (19 yrs old) in 1910 and living with his mother. His parents were from a Mormon background? Did he have two wives at that time? We also know that he had a daughter who may have died very young in an auto accident before 1919. I have a picture of her with her parents.
Until a year ago we knew nothing of his past, except the stories he passed on to mom and her brother Roy Alfred Roberts b. 1924 (death 1987). None of these stories ever suggested that he had changed his last name, only that he had switched his name around a little and had been married before. If this sounds familiar to anyone, please email me. and my website is still in progress: http://home.earthlink.net/~slmaps/oneil/id11.html but this has photos and more on my O'Neil family. Thanks, Laura Hurst
