Jean,

The Ohio/Mississippi River system moves a huge tonnage of freight today, and
was doing so before the steamboats came along. They used barges and rafts to
float products and people down stream, at least during the wetter seasons.
There were times when the river was too low in that era before the flood
control and navigation dams of today. A lot of loggers went to LA during the
off season here and after the first cutting of timbers had pretty well
cleared the forests here. There are a lot of article in the old newspapers
about people who have gone south to work in specific fields, and plan to
return later.

The Ohio is about 1/2 mile wide( here along Lawrence co) and the pool is
maintained at a minimum of about 20 feet deep at the face of the dams. The
Ohio is actually the larger river where it and the Mississippi join.
Apparently one of the first dam projects was to solve the problem of the
falls of the Ohio near Louisville, KY.
