Subject: [L'wrence] From Southern Ohio to Franklin, LA

Hi all!
I wonder if someone can help me figure out a migration pattern here. I have noticed in several instances that there is evidence of a number of my Gillett family members being in Franklin, St. Mary Parish around 1836 and 1837. I have several questions. First of all, one of the Gilletts was a steamboat pilot. How does one get by boat from southern Ohio to Franklin, LA? Secondly, was there something going on in Ohio or in Franklin around that time to lure them down there? At least some of the family stayed and kept their primary residence in Ohio, but I suspect others had actually moved down there. Was the idea of spending summer in a northern climate and the winter in the south already happening? This family was not extraordinarily wealthy, so that seems to puzzle me. Can anyone shed some light on this?
