IMPRESSIVE FUNERAL SERVICES HELD TODAY FOR JACKSON COUNTY'S OLDEST RESIDENT
Catherine "Grandma" Grow Dies on Saturday
Was Nearing 101st Birthday at Time of Death
A grave in old McCune cemetery today became the final resting place for
Jackson county's oldest and one of its best beloved citizens... Mrs.
Catherine Hartley "Grandma" Grow. She was buried today following
impressive rites at the Limerick church where hundreds of her friends and
many relatives came to pay their last respects to this little old lady who
would have been 101 years of age on March 25th.
Death ended her unusual career Saturday morning at the home of her son,
John Grow, in Liberty township, following a brief period of failing
health. Complications incident to such advanced age caused her death.
She leaves only the one son, John, and several other relatives but her
friends were numbered in the hundreds.
Born in Jackson county in 1837, the former Catherine Hartley was married
in 1858 to John W. Grow, a native of Virginia. She lived all her life in
Liberty township.
Her husband died of yellow fever immediately after the Civil war, being
stricken while on guard duty at Chattanooga, Tenn., in 1865. He was a
member of the 18th Regiment of Ohio Volunteer Infantry and served
throughout the war. He lies in the National Cemetery near Chattanooga.
Many changes took place during the century which Mrs. Grow passed through
and it was always her delight to recount them to her friends. However, she
was a stout proponent of the modern age and maintained a continued interest
in current events up until the time of her last illness.
She was a strong Democrat throughout her life, and among her many
treasurers were messages from President Franklin D. Roosevelt and other
high governmental officials.
Funeral rites Tuesday were arranged by Director Charles L. Wood.
