Subject: Re: [OHHOCKIN] James Palmer
Date: Sat, 27 Nov 2010 10:05:32 -0500
First Generation
1. James PALMER was born on 23 Dec 1809 in New Castle County, Delaware,
USA. The date of birth calculated from his age at death is 27 November 1807
or 15 December 1809. A different age is given on his death record and
cemetery marker. The date of 23 December 1809 came from family information
given to me. He died on 3 Mar 1883 at the age of 73 in Marion Township,
Hocking County, Ohio, USA.1-3 He was buried after 3 Mar 1883 in Mt. Tabor
Cemetery, Marion Township, Hocking County, Ohio, USA.2 James served in the
military the Civil War.2 I have not been able to determine what unit James
served in in the Civil War and so I do not have a copy of his military
record. There are a number of men named James Palmer who served from Ohio.
The most likely units are Company K of the 58th Regiment Ohio Voluntary
Infantry or the Company K of the 151st Regiment Ohio Voluntary Infantry.
Both of these units were from Hocking County according to the History of the
Hocking Valley. The James Palmer of the 58th Regiment was aged 43 and
enlisted in 1861 for 3 years. This age is not right for our James Palmer.
The second James Palmer enlisted in 1864 for 100 days. There was no age
given. The 151st Regiment was composed of the 33rd Regiment, Ohio National
Guard, from Allen County, and the 57th Battalion, Ohio National Guard, from
Hocking County. It is more likely that this is our James Palmer. According
to Ancestry.com James Palmer, Company K, 151st Regiment applied for a
pension.
Second Generation
2. Jonathon PALMER Sr. was born in 1783 in Delaware. USA.4-6 He died on 26
May 1859 at the age of 76 in Richland Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, USA
(probably).4-5 He was buried after 26 May 1859 in New Salem Methodist
Episcopal Cemetery, Thorn Township, Perry County, Ohio, USA.4-5 Family
records indicate that Jonathan was the son of James Palmer of Rockingham
County, Virginia but I have found no indication of that at all. There is no
indication that James was ever in Delaware and all signs seem to prove that
Jonathan was from Delaware and was not in Virginia. Records of researchers
working on James Palmer of Virginia do not include Jonathan. Nancy DUNDON
and Jonathon PALMER Sr. were married between 1805 and 1809 in Delaware (?),
USA. They appeared in the census on 6 Aug 1810 in Appoquinimink Hundred, New
Castle County, Delaware, USA.7 Ancestry.com lists St. Georges Hundred from
page 268/270 through page 303/301, but someone apparently missed the fact
that Appoquinimink Hundred starts on page 281/283.
There are three other Palmer households listed in New Castle County: those
of Caesar, James and Wm. William is in Appoquinimink Hundred, James in St.
Georges Hundred and Caesar in Brandywine Hundred.
There are 2 persons in the Caesar household and both are listed as "all
other free persons". They migrated to Richland Township, Fairfield County,
Ohio in 1818 6 Nancy and Jonathon appeared in the census on 7 Aug 1820 in
Richland Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, USA.8 They appeared in the census
on 1 Jun 1830 in Richland Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, USA.9 They sold
to Henry Yanaway for $200 12 30/100 acres in section 16 township 17 range 17
on 30 Dec 1835 in Richland Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, USA10 Nancy and
Jonathon appeared in the census on 1 Jun 1840 in Richland Township,
Fairfield County, Ohio, USA.11 They appeared in the census on 1 Jun 1850 in
Richland Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, USA.12 They sold to Jonathan
Palmer Jr. for $1250 50 acres in section 16 township 17 range 17 on 18 Oct
1852 in Richland Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, USA13
3. Nancy DUNDON was born on 5 Sep 1789 in Delaware. USA. Date of birth was
calculated from age at death. She appeared in the census on 1 Jun 1860 in
Richland Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, USA.14 She died on 21 Jul 1862 at
the age of 72 in Richland Township, Fairfield County, Ohio, USA
(probably).15-16 Nancy was buried after 21 Jul 1862 in New Salem Methodist
Episcopal Cemetery, Thorn Township, Perry County, Ohio, USA.15-16 She had
her estate probated in Oct 1862-Nov 1862 in Fairfield County Probate Court,
Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio, USA. Estate case #3660. Reuben M. Philips
was appointed administrator 9 October 1862. An inventory and appraisal of
the estate was done by John Stith, Jacob Baker and Joseph H. Reid and a sale
held in November 1862 - filed 14 November 1862.
(Note: the estate papers that I have are numbered 490, 491 and 492. These
are not copies of the original papers but appear to be transcribed copies -
maybe from an Inventory Book.)
I also examined the original papers in the packet and found heir's receipts
for the following: James Palmer $1.20, Hugh Love $1.20, Geo. Palmer $1.23,
Hamilton Palmer $1.20, Wm. Palmer $1.20, Louisa Palmer $1.23, John Palmer
$1.20, and $1.23 each for B. Palmer, Wm. Barker, Jackson Palmer and Mariah
Bennet.
A headstone 3 feet 2 1/2 inches long was to be inscribed: Nancy Palmer, wife
of Jonathan Palmer Sen., died 21 July 1862, aged 72y 10m 16d "Blessed and
holy are they that hath part in the first resurrection" and delivered to New
Salem "next spring". The cost was $38.

Methodist Episcopal Cemetery, Thorn Township, Perry County, Ohio, USA.18-19
vii. Jonathan PALMER Jr. was born on 8 May
1822 in Ohio, USA. Date of birth was calculated from age at death. He signed
a will on 1 Jun 1864 in Fairfield County, Ohio, USA.20 He died on 16 Jul
1864 at the age of 42 in Fairfield County, Ohio, USA (probably).21-22

Cemetery, Thorn Township, Perry County, Ohio, USA.21-22 He had his estate
probated on 6 Sep 1864 in Fairfield County Probate Court, Lancaster,

of appraisers (H. B. Eyman, John Stith and Reuben M. Philips). A list of
property set off for the widow "without appraising the same" was included.
An appraisement and sale of the remaining possessions was held on 12 October
1864. Louisa Palmer is named as Jonathan's widow in these papers. Several
promissory notes were listed and also mentioned was "two hundred & fourteen
