This is all very interesting. I don’t think I was aware that Maud McLure Kelly repudiated her research on Abraham Odom. I met her when young but don’t remember that much about her. I remember her friend Mrs. John Oden Luttrell better. Miss Maud and Mrs. Luttrell were both brilliant researchers, but some of their work was indeed based based on theories when there were gaps in the paper trail. You certainly can’t argue with DNA evidence. A minor clarification, Maud Kelly descended from a sister of Alexander Oden Sr.’s wife, Letitia Bussey. Miss Maud’s brother William Milner Kelly married his cousin, a descendant of Letitia Bussey Oden, and they both wanted to adopt my uncle, a near neighbor said to have been a very personable kid, but his mother wouldn’t let them have him. Instead, they shared him! They later had children of their own. Kellys still own the Capt. Henry Penn Oden house where Maud and Milner grew up!
, built in 1842 by H.P. Oden’s father (Alexander Oden Jr.) for his marriage to Sarah Ann Frances Thomas. The house built by Joshua Oden for his son is across the road and a few hundred yards south. It is owned by my second cousin. My half brother was heir to John Piney Oden’s country place.
