For older events, check out PapersPast (http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/).

For more recent events, or for papers not included at PapersPast, try
National Library of New Zealand (http://www.natlib.govt.nz/) or your
local library.

A death registration should contain information (age and sex) about
children who survived the parent. BDM Online - Historical Records
(https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/Home/) for deaths at least
50 years ago or where the deceased's date of birth was at least 80 years
ago. You can order copies of registrations that are more recent, just
not online.
