To All
I have run into this very same question before!!!
People have asked, Where can I put my data and have it safely stored and
available to me, or anyone at anytime, forever. for free!!
The answer is an easy one, a FHL, Family History Library of The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
That is what the Ancestral File is. It is for use by members and non members
to enter their trees. When you go to the search section of
www.familysearch.org and look at the second arrow down, that search section
is Ancestral File. It is comprised of every family tree that has been
provided to them, in what ever fashion, either
by members or by non members. This is the section where ancestor entries are
linked. If you had put all your data in, (This can be done from a disk) and
then went to the online section and entered your name and clicked on
pedagree it would show your tree as far back as you have entered it.
One of the reasons you see so many duplications when you search the sites
is the researchers that don't recognize the connection to another tree and
reenter the same name, thus multiple listings of the same individual. The
church does not correct data entered by any researcher, only the researcher
can do that and once
My wifes tree is in there and if I were to print all the information in
just tree form, it takes over 200 sheets to print it.
Its been in there since her grandmother and aunts did it over 50 years ago.
It was available by film & photo copy before the advent of the Computer.
I was researching in a FHL one day, and a lady brought in a huge, huge box
of genealogical research going back into the 1600's. She said that the lady
had died and her children had cleaned up the house to sell it, and it was
set out by the trash for pick up. She recognized the box, for when her and
the lady would have tea once and awhile, the lady would go and get the
latest discovery out and show her. She started crying and said that the
lady had done all that work for her children, and she couldn't stand to see
her friends life work go to waste and asked if they would take it.
They gladly accepted it and for weeks, every time I would go in to research
someone was keying that box of information in..
They microfilm everything, and it all gets stored in a bomb proof granite
vault in the Utah mountains. Now in 10 years everything is supposed to be
digatized.
Sounds pretty good to me
Patrick
