Researching my wife’s family in Troy led me to look at all of the
SHAUGHNESSY (and its misspellings) families in the 1840 and 1850 censuses.
I thought that I might post my findings not only to stimulate an interchange
with other people researching the same surname but also to assist anyone who
may be looking for these families.

I welcome any comments, additions, and/or corrections.

SHAUGHNESSY families in Troy, Rensselaer County, NY, 1840-1850

In the 1830 census images by Ancestry.com for Troy, there were no names in
the census index that could likely have been originally SHAUGHNESSY or any
of its misspellings.

In the 1840 census are the following families:

1. John SHANASEY 0 2 0 0 0 0 1 - 1 0 0 0 1 (2 males 5-10,
1 male 40-50; 1 female 0-5, 1 female 20-30);
2. Michael SHANASEY 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 - 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1
(1 male 60-70; 1 female 60-70).
These families were living 5 households apart and Michael and wife are of
the correct age to have been John’s parents, although their relationship is
unknown.

In the 1850 census are the following families:

1.Thomas 25, Julia 27, both b. in Ireland; Thomas 1, b. NY.

Name spelled SHANNESSY:
1.Daniel 30, Mary 35, Mary 3, parents b. Ireland, child b. NY;
2.Ann 23, boarder, b. Ireland;
3.Bridget 17, boarder, b. NY;
4.John 60, Ellen 41, both b. Ireland; David 7, John 2, Margaret 5, Ellen
14, Bridget 6/12, all b. NY;

Name spelled SHONNESSY:
1.Patrick 47, Bridget 35, both b. Ireland; John 10, Bridget 9, Margaret 8,
Martin 6, Ellen 3, Patrick 1, all b. NY;
2.Ellen O? 36, b. Ireland; Mary Ann 16, Alice 14, John H. 10, Michael 6,
all b. NY;

Names spelled SHAWNESSY:
1.Michael 32, Catherine 34, both b. Ireland; Bridget 10, Catherine 8,
Thomas 5, Mary 5/12, all b. NY.

There are no families indexed with the O’ in front of any variation of
spelling of this surname other than the O without an apostrophe after Ellen
SHONNESSY’s given name.

The Mary Ann SHONNESSY, age 16, born NY, is most likely the Mary Ann
SHAUGHNESSY, b. abt. 1835 in NY, who became the wife of Thomas, aka Michael,
WALSH shown in the 1860 Troy census as WELCH and also in the 1870 census for
Watervliet, Albany County, NY, with the name shown as WALSH in 1880 and in
subsequent generations of their children in Watervliet. Michael/Thomas
WALSH and Mary Ann SHAUGHNESSY were my wife’s second great grandparents.
