I found these notations in the card file compiled by the Stephentown
Historical Society and have questions I hope someone has the answers to:
Paul Hinckley
*Resident on OLD map. Van Allen map 7D.
*Tax list 11 April 1787 as living on Greenman's place;
*same listing 2 Sept 1788.
*Resident 1791.
*VR papers pg 9, 58 acres, 1784 map C3, "This lot is unimproved, is very
stoney and uneven but is well timbered with beach, maple & hemlock. Leased
Henry Chase at 5 Bush wheat 1791.
*30 Apr 1822 ----- the right to this farm conveyed by Moses Bedunce the
owner & occupant to the lessor - see William Huntington.
*Also on VR papers pg 12, 64 acres, 1784 map C4, "The soil of the
easternmost half of this farm is considerably good. The rest more
indifferent, the whole is a good deal stoney, the timber beach maple &
hemlock. Leased 22 Feb 1793 at 5 Bush wheat to Paul Hinckley" SE corner of
his property is marked with red chalk PH1789JEVA."
*Under the name of William (see) Huntington, VR papers pg. 29, 40 acres,
they shared the lot and signed lease 21 June 1791 @ 3 ½ bu. wheat.
*VR 1790 census
*charged in a S'town store ledger 1793-1802"
Now, my questions:
Can anyone tell me what VR papers are?
If I ordered the microfilm of tax lists from the LDS Family History Center,
would I see any more information besides peoples' names and where they
lived?
What does "Leased Henry Chase at 5 Bush wheat 1791." mean? Is 5 bushels of
wheat the cost of leasing the farm?
What could the red chalk mark, PH1789JEVA, mean? I suppose 1789 would be
the year.
It looks like I am in need of a good map of Stephentown if I am to
understand where my people lived. Does anyone know if the Van Allen map is
one online? I am going to look at the land records and see if I can sort
out why there are so many names involved with this land.
If anyone has any other information about Paul Hinckley and family, I would
be interested in it. I already have him in several census reports; 1790,
1800, 1820.
I also find him in Deed Records - Grantor Index 1791-1895 Rensselaer Co,
NY - LDS film #469675 p. 1135 Paul Hinckley (grantor) to Azariah Hinckely
(grantee) recorded 26 Feb 1834, Book 32, p 134. I'll be looking at the
deeds next.
Thanks,
Ann A.
