Hello New York!

I must apologize as this post does not relate to ancestry. It relates to an urgent plea I received from a friend in need. Her brother is in your fair city seeking cancer treatment. He desperately needs platelets. I am in New Hampshire and cannot donate, but I thought I could reach out to New Yorkers to spread the word. Please, please, if you can help this man, do so. If you can only spread the word to family and friends, that would be a wonderful gesture. Please take a few minutes out of your busy lives to help a stranger. Thank you for reading this.

Peter Thompson

Here is my friend's plea:

For the first time in months, there is a ray of hope for my brother who has
a rare form of cancer, and is now at the Intensive Care Unit at Sloan
Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Joe will be receiving platelets
every 6 hours for the next three weeks. Usually, a donation of platelets is
a mixed "bag" of platelets from different donors. If, however, Joe receives
a dedicated bag of platelets from one donor, his chances of recovery are
better because the platelets are from one person. The doctors have asked us
to contact everyone we know, and try to pass the word to help Joe receive
"dedicated platelets."

I am asking you, or anyone you know, who will be in the NY City area in the
next 3 weeks to PLEASE consider going to Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 1250
First AVenue (between 67th and 68th Streets) to donate platelets for my
brother. I know this email may be a long shot, but I hope and pray that this
email will reach anyone and everyone who might be able to help my brother!

The phone number to make an appointment is 212-639-7643, and the Center is
open 7 days a week. It takes about 2 1/2 hours, but is just like giving
blood. Go to the Sloan Kettering website for more information.
(www.SloanKettering.com) You can donate platelets every 3 days, but the
platelets only last for 5 days, so the donation must be at Sloan Kettering
and not at a different hospital, unfortunately.

Please send this to anyone who might be able to help--my family will be
eternally grateful!
Thank you!
Cathy Wojtkun
