I'm hoping one of you very knowledgeable people about old Montgomery-Fulton Co. can help me out. My 3rd great-grandfather Benjamin Ripton came with his wife Dorothy Toplis from Derbyshire, England to what was then Montgomery Co. in 1821. He was enabled to buy land in one of the last enabling acts of the New York State legislature in April 1822 which he farmed, according to the censuses of 1830 and 1840. Benjamin died in 1848, but his son Henry was a farmer in 1850, although in 1860 he was a teamster and by 1870 worked in the leather industry. The location of the family was always given as Johnstown, and later the family lived in Johnstown on Clinton Ave. What I'm wondering is if there is any way to find out just what land Benjamin would have purchased in 1822 and presumably passed to his son Henry. I'm assuming the land was later sold. Are there old land records around, and if so, where? Thanks for any info anyone can give me.
