Karl,

As a general rule, deeds are recorded in the county courthouse in the
county in which the land is situate. From 1766 to 1786 Bennington was
deemed to be part of Albany County, New York. So I would be inclined to
suggest that you check for early Bennington deeds in the Albany County
Clerk's Office before looking in the Bennington County Courthouse.
