David--
I have no idea if this helps, but here goes...

My g. grandmother's name was Mary Mattheis. I believe she had a sister named
Katharina Mattheis & a bro. named Henry. My records for Mary Mattheis had
her emmigrating from East Germany cir. 1885.

I've looked at Mathias as an alternate sp. (I have no idea whether this is
the case!) I'd like to see whether any others from the family immigrated
here. I checked the Palentine site (German ancestry) at
www.genealogy.org/~palam/idx_m-o.htm and got the following information:
Mathias, Peter ship: unknown date: 2/1832, Baltimore, MD
Mattias, George -- Ship d'Orleans, 5/6/1836, NYC, NY
Matthis, Hans Jacob-- Samuel, 8/17/1733, Philadelphia, PA

Henry Mathias rings a bell & I've been looking through my records for him,
but so far, no luck... Perhaps a Census. Will write again if I find him.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
Barb :)
