Dear David and all,
Here is a line from my Houghtaling News Letter sent out
in December:
"Most of us are finding out that this surname is
one of the hardest to research for specific first
names because of the MYRIAD ways the LAST name
can be spelled! (Let alone pronounced). Over the
past two months "we"(contributors to this newsletter
and I ) have actually found several "lost" ancestors
who were in"plain sight", so to speak, except that the
last name wasn't anywhere near the spelling we expected.
There over 50 ACTUAL ways that our surname is
spelled/has been found. Here are 46 of them from
my own records, which have all proven out to be
Houghtaling relatives despite how odd that may seem:
Hochteel, Hochteeling
Hogdielen Hoochtelink
Hoochteling, Hooghteeling,
Hoogtaking, Hoogtaling,
Hoogteel, Hoogteelen,
Hoogteeling, Hoogteelingh,
Hoogteeleck Hoogteelink,
Hoogteijling, Hooteling,
Hoogtelsing, Hoogten,
Hoogteyling, Hoogteylingh,
Hoogthaeling, Hoogtieling,
Hoogtoling, Hooteeling,
Hooteling, Hootyling,
Hotalin, Hotaling,
Hoteling, Hotelling,
Houghtailing, Hougstaling,
Houghtaling, Houghtalin,
Houghtanling,
Houghtelin, Houghteline,
Houghteling, Houghteeling,
Hougteeling, Houghteeling,
Houghtline,
Houtaling, Houtling
Hultailen Ochtlen
******************
Can you add any more spellings?"
Joe Travis email: "Joe Travis" >
on his web page: http://www.my-ged.com/db/page/travis/07070
says, "The fifty or more variations in spelling, ranging from
Hogdielen to Hultailen to Hoochtelink, represent a good example
of phonetic recordings by Dutch, German and English clerks and
ministers as this name became Anglicized and evolved into the
present forms of Houghtaling, Hotaling, and Hotelling."
After being aware of all the variations and possibilities, a person
needs to decide on a "standard" spelling for his own records, and
record the variations by which each individual has been found in
notes. I have chosen "Houghteling" for my records. Al Albright,
who has pretty well covered the descendancy for both original lines,
has chosen "Hotaling." Al's web pages and Caroline Ross-Pence's
both have comprehensive Houghtaling research, with spelling
variations noted.
