My guess is that that your young man did go to school in the winter, possibly his
last year. After all, even today many students graduate at 17 and in his day,
many dropped out long before that. There's no way of knowing whether he worked
on that farm or another in previous summers, but it looks to me like he was a
farm hand rather than an apprentice. I'm basing that on the apparent lack of an
occupation for him. It's probably not always true, but I know I've seen occ.
like "apprentice carpenter" on other census listings.
Some of the individuals listed may have been boarders, either summer or
year-round, as well as farmhands. (Though I'd expect occupations for male names
if boarders).
