Dear Maggie,
It was nothing like the Hazel I cut here and Hazel is light and doesnt grow
to the size. It was hard, a devil to cut and as to splitting....... no
chance. About 10" diameter, no visible grain that I can recall, about the
weight of Oak. Saying that gives me an idea, maybe one of the other oaks,
Holm, Hollyoak, Quercus Ilex and etc.
The area was settled by the Romans who planted vinyards on the banks and
established papermaking.
Gunpowder was the Kent locals name for it.
Regards,
Mikey.
