George Gordon, the son of Abel and Ester Gordon, was killed in California
in 1856. An old letter found in the home of his niece. The letter was
folded 3 times to make 6 divisions, the letter was under a oil-cloth and
stuck to the shelf leaving that portion.
This letter was written to his parents in Indiana from a lawyer (name
illegible).
Weaverville, California, 12 July 1856. The letter stated that George
Gordon and some other men had caught some Indians who had stolen their
mules. They were going to kill the offenders and had some Indians present
to witness the execution as a lesson to what happens to theives. One
Indian refused to die and George Gordon in for a closer shot and got in
the way of a Mr. Maydivice (spelling was illegible) and was shot instead.
The writer of the letter said he wrote a full account in the Shasta
Courier. He also stated that George Gordon obnoxious and his own worst
enemy. There was no mention of a wife or children. From the letter I got
the impression that he may have owned a store and his debts were greater
that his assets.
I would appreciate it very much to hear from anyone who can come up with
a copy of the Newspaper article, are anything at all on George Gordon.
