| First of all, I am assuming you are talking about 1981, not 1881.

| The death index will have the exact dod, location of death, certificate
| number and spouse's initials if given.
|
| You might want to try GENOBIT and see if someone has indexed a paper in
| the area in that time period.

| As to the newspapers on-line - use a search engine for the paper you
| think might have the obituary in it.
|
| If you don't know where he died then you have to send for a death
| certificate which will be of value in more ways than that. It will give
| you cemetery location, funeral home name, name of the informant, etc.
| Writing to the funeral home or cemetery can also give you more
| information.
