As infants, my father-in-law, William WAITERS, and his 2 brothers were
placed in an orphanage somewhere in northern CA. In 1909, their father
remarried and brought the 3 boys home. One brother, Leland WAITERS, aged
about 5, apparently had some kind of brain damage. He was placed in "some
institution" and never seen again by his brothers. They never knew where
he was or what happened to him after that.
Leland WAITERS is listed as a 15-year-old inmate in the Somoma State Home
in the 1920 census. His death certificate shows he died aged 75, 3 Aug
1980, at 315 South Avenue, Sacramento. It states he never married, had no
occupation, and had as his "usual residence":
Stockton State Hospital
510 E. Magnolia Street
Stockton, CA
A phone search did not turn up a "Stockton State Hospital."
The informant was "Public Administrators, 4400 V Street, Sacramento.
An autopsy was performed by Coroner George L. Nielsen.
He was buried at the Sunset Lawn Memorial Park by the Sacramento Memorial
Lawn Mortuary. I couldn't find addresses for these places either!
Any suggestions how to get more information about him? No one in the
family knows his diagnosis, how severe his disability was, or what kind of
life he had. Would there be any records we could get as closest relatives?
My father-in-law died before Leland did, talking about his younger brother
frequently and wondering what had happened to him. The rest of the family
still wonders.
Thanks for any suggestions.
