Lesley,
First of all, I am assuming you are talking about 1981, not 1881.
The death index will have the exact dod, location of death, certificate
number and spouse's initials if given.
You might want to try GENOBIT and see if someone has indexed a paper in
the area in that time period.
As to the newspapers on-line - use a search engine for the paper you
think might have the obituary in it.
If you don't know where he died then you have to send for a death
certificate which will be of value in more ways than that. It will give
you cemetery location, funeral home name, name of the informant, etc.
Writing to the funeral home or cemetery can also give you more
information.
